David Martin-Richmond RUDEC testimony May 2010- June 2010

I arrived in Belo on the 10th May having been kindly picked up from Douala by Joshua. As we had kept in contact before I left the UK I felt as though we were already good friends, which was comforting, having never been to Africa, and being quite nervous about the whole thing. I came to Belo to teach English; Joshua arranged for me to teach in a local school, where I taught a class of 75 children for 2 hours per day. As I had not had teaching experience before I was very nervous, but soon settled into my role and enjoyed the classes. The class was big but most of the pupils were willing to learn. As well as teaching in the school, I taught on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as part of the orphan after school program. This would be in a local classroom near the RUDEC office. The teaching varied, from English and maths to computer labs and even drawing and games. I enjoyed this very much, and I think the children did too! As term ended half way through my stay, I also arranged for my school class to have extra English lessons. Unfortunately only a handful of students turned up, so myself and a fellow volunteer would teach them English in our own compound. Again, we would vary the lessons and subjects, and always give them an incentive of playing football after the lesson. Belo I found was a nice place to stay, and as I went in the early part of the rainy season, the countryside was lush and beautiful. I would often go on long walks, on my own and with other volunteers. There are many waterfalls around which are all worth seeing. I would like to thank Joshua for helping me with my preparation and giving me confidence in my ability to be able to help and teach. There is still a long way to go with RUDEC, but I think with the right volunteers it will improve its already good work in the community.
