RUDEC Testimony: Louise Harris

louise.JPGI volunteered for RUDEC for 6 months, from October 2009 to March 2010. I found the opportunity for 'Business Development' on idealist.org and was attracted by the small friendly nature of RUDEC, and that the organisation did not charge fees for volunteering. I was excited to go to Cameroon as I had always wanted to travel to West Africa and see a country off the usual tourist trail. RUDEC is based in a rural area in the anglophone North West Region. A days travel from Douala takes you into the most beautiful mountainous scenery and to the little town of Belo, where within a few days everyone will know your face! In my role at RUDEC I immersed myself in every aspect of the charity, and all of its activities. During my time I found myself visiting orphans, in board meetings, searching for baby goats, setting up new Senior's Clubs, getting bogged down in financial reporting and painting furniture as well as much more! Although RUDEC is a small NGO, if you have the initiative and drive to put good ideas int motion you can make lot of your volunteering experience in Cameroon. If you have an idea of how to help, tell Joshua, I'm sure he will be happy to help you make it happen! In terms of Cameroon as a destination in general, I would say it is in no way set up for visitors, and I love it for it! It may be hard work, but you can climb mountains, visit local chiefs, see stunning scenery, relax on perfect white beaches and travel through game reserves all within the same country. There is a rich culture here including music, dance and beautiful craft work. I had the experience of a lifetime at RUDEC, and if you have imagination and the can-do attitude to do something for Belo, then RUDEC is for you!
